Glasgow South

Strathbungo Railway Station

Strathbungo Railway Station was part of the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway. The station opened on 1st December 1877 and closed on 28th May 1962. A two platformed station in a shallow cutting with the booking office on a girder overbridge with stairways leading to the platforms. The booking office is now a shop and the platforms were cut back. Trains still use the line here.

The Caledonian Railway opened the railway station here around 1871, there is no exact date, however in the Glasgow Post Office Directories held at the Mitchell Library, the station is listed for 1881. The station closed in 1965.

The station was located at the top of the left hand track.

Southside Railway Station

Cumberland Street Railway Station

Opened by Glasgow and South Western Railway in 1900 as a replacement for the Main Street Station in Gorbals. Closed in 1966 when St Enoch Railway Station was closed. Originally called Eglinton Street Station but renamed in the 1920’s to avoid confusion with the other local station. The Architect for this building is William Melville, Engineer to the Glasgow and South Western Railway.

Bridge Street Station

There were two stations here named Bridge Street.

The first was Constructed in 1841 for the Glasgow and Paisley Joint Railway. The building consisted of a two storey building with five central bays and two projecting end pavillions, each with the remains of an arched entrance. There was originally a central Doric portico, removed c. 1950.

The second station at 36-54 Bridge St was built in 1890 for the Caledonian Railway. The station closed in 1906 when Central Station was extended.
